God Governs in the Affairs of Men

Updated: May 15, 2021

Tomorrow is Election Day.

And I realize I probably should have written this post weeks ago, but I hadn't felt called, nor was I prepared, to write this until now.

Tomorrow is Election Day.

That leaves us with two more days to vote for who we, the people of the United States of America, want to guide us as a nation for the next four years. Anyone who knows me well knows that I could sit here and type out a long thing about just who you should vote for. And, God help me, I want to.

But I won't. Simply because that's not the point of this post. Because no matter who you vote for--for president, for senator, for your city mayor or county commissioner--God's will will prevail.

It's pretty obvious that I believe that. And, if you've ever listened to some of my speeches or read some of my other posts, y'all know that I have very strong feelings about God's sovereignty, His will, and His desire for our country. I touched upon this subject in my post "An Appeal to Heaven," back when all this COVID mess began in March--but I didn't realize then just how much we all, even us Christians, need to hear that message now.

There are a lot of people and a lot of Christians, even, who neither see nor believe that God has His hand in this election--and not only the election, but in the pandemic, in other nations, in individual people's lives. A great deal of them want to believe that God is impartial, that He refuses to, quite frankly, endorse a presidential candidate, that whatever happens just happens. And, honestly, any Christian who believes that might as well believe in evolution.

None of that is true.

For one, God is endorsing and rooting for and loving on and blessing any person who follows His rules. Isaiah 48:18 says, "O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me." If any of us--including presidents and other politicians--take a stand for what is right and follow God's commandments and precepts, He will side with us. And if President Trump is taking a stand for life, the Second Amendment, traditional marriage, and our God-given rights, then God will bless him. Proverbs 3:33 puts it like this, "The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just."

Whether you are leading a nation or leading a home of four kids, God will bless you for following His Word.

Now, I'm not into the prosperity gospel, because it is in the Bible that bad things do happen to good people and vice versa. That's life and this fallen world we live in. That's the devil trying to sully the name of God. But do you know what is also in the Bible? "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

If you side with Jesus Christ, He sides with you. He is your intercessor to the Father. He is praying to God for your prosperity and His continued blessing in your life.

King David was a man after God's own heart. He led His people, the Israelites, into a deeper faith and commitment to God than they had seen since Moses. And do you know why?

Because David had been anointed by God.

"And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah."

God had chosen King Saul. He had chosen King David. He created a lineage for Judah and Israel that spanned centuries that would bring about exactly what He wanted to come to pass. Every king, righteous or wicked, every queen, every prince, every birth and every death, God had His hand in. He was on the side of kings like David, who trusted in Him, who turned to Him, who followed His commandments and repented when he didn't.

God chose Donald J. Trump.

God will choose him again.

And do you know why?

Because President Trump sided with God. I know a lot of you don't believe that for a minute, but how can a non-believer be so unwavering against the forces of darkness? How can a non-believer feel so strongly against abortion, homosexuality, and the destruction of our country? He may not do everything right--good grief, nobody's perfect. No one is good; no, not one--but he stands for the same values our forefathers stood for.

And God wants that for our nation. He wants America to be born again. He wants godly men and women who are filled with His Holy Spirit to lead us in the way everlasting. He wants to create an American lineage that will prepare the entire world for the return of His Son.

Speaking of our forefathers...

Who was there with them? Who paved the way for the Declaration of Independence? Who led George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin?

God did.

God cared enough about His people, about America, and about these men and others to help them establish a nation worthy to be called "One Nation, Under God." Scratch that--He wanted to display His glory so brightly that He established a nation so full of love and righteous that hundreds of countries either wanted to be just like it or destroy it, that millions of people ran into the safe haven of America to escape poverty, persecution, and war.

He had His hand in the founding of America and He will have His will done in her now.

Benjamin Franklin knew this. At the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in Philadelphia, he stated, "I have lived a long time, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”

America would not be here if God had not ordained her to be, paved the way for her, and set the burning desire in the hearts of the American colonists to break away from the British monarchy.

God governs in the affairs of men.

God is watching as people check off their absentee ballots, as other file in and out of poll booths. God knows exactly what people are going to vote--and, guess what! He has urged each person voting to vote. He has seen what is in each person's heart and He is completely prepared for everything. He's the one who set it all into motion, you know.

So no matter what happens, God is the boss. God is governing this nation--not Trump, not Biden, not the Left or the Right, not the Senate or the House, not even the Deep State or the Clintons or other countries.

God is in charge of all of them, all of us, and all of this world.

So maybe you didn't need to hear that today. Maybe you did. Maybe you know this, but you just needed a reminder that He is in control. Maybe you know of a friend or family member who needs to hear this--share it. Email it to them. Post this on social media.

Someone out there needs to know this--and I know that because I've read posts and heard things from people, from Christians, who truly think that God has little interest in politics, in politicians, and in our nation.

But here's my word for y'all today--Benjamin Franklin's word for the people of a baby America--God governs in the affairs of men.
